General Scharnhorst steps back for Prince Maurits

To honour one of the most famous Dutch strategists and internationally recognised military innovators, the Scharnhorst Room in the Headquarters building was renamed as the Prince Maurits Room. On 29 March the Commander of 1 (GE/NL) Corps, Lieutenant General Norbert van Heyst, officially opened the room after an introductory lecture by Mr Drs. Kamphuis, the Director of the Institute for Military History of the Netherlands Army Staff.

At the end of his lecture, Mr Kamphuis captured the importance of Prince Maurits as follows: “Maurits of Nassau is among the most important figures in Dutch history and is one of the icons of military history. (…) Maurits made a name for himself as a troop commander, by making swift decisions and acting boldly on the chaotic battlefield, and working methodically and skilfully in planning campaigns and sieges. With inspiring leadership and innovative reforms he succeeded within a short space of time in transforming a shaken army, forced onto the defensive, into the authoritative army in Europe. (…) He would not have hesitated to endorse your motto, Communitate Valemus, and I am sure that his name will inspire you, Generals, ladies and gentlemen, in the execution of your challenging mission.”
